Urban survival - preparation for the crisis in the city

You say "survival" and you have Bear Grylls in front of your eyes, jumping from a waterfall - right into the alligator pool to hunt reptiles for dinner. There is a belief that the art of survival is a fight against the forces of nature, which try to keep us away from the desired civilization at all costs. But what if it is civilization that turns out to be equally, or even more malicious? Here comes the term of urban survival, more and more often referred to as modern. What is the art of survival in the city and what to do to best prepare for a crisis in your neighborhood? I invite you to read the post.

Today's threats are not in the woods

In the era of satellite maps and GPS navigation, it is less and less common for a traveler to get lost in the wild. At the same time, the risk of terrorist attacks, climate change-related disasters and threats from new, previously unknown viruses is constantly increasing. The SARS-CoV-2 epidemic has made us all aware of how little it takes for the virus to spread across the planet. You can imagine the global chaos that would ensue if a much more deadly pathogen emerged instead of the relatively mild coronavirus.

Large-scale terrorist attacks, floods and yet another epidemic - these are just some of the dangers that lie in wait for city dwellers. There is more and more talk of threats of blackouts not just a few hours, but many weeks. In the face of the most serious crisis situations, only the prepared will survive.

Urban survival - how to prepare for a crisis?

Where to start preparing for urban survival? The easiest way is to visualize a specific crisis situation and complete the escape backpack (BOB) based on it. If your equipment is packed, it will allow you to leave the house at the very first sign of a threat - you will not waste time packing your luggage in a hurry.

Unfortunately - the equipment itself is of little use. Urban survival, just like the traditional one, should be constantly trained. You can do it yourself. However, it is easier to prepare in the wilderness, where dangers are always plentiful. In the case of modern survival, it is more difficult - it is impossible to create a reliably simulated crisis situation, such as an epidemic. Likewise, in a properly functioning city, dry to shavings, it is difficult to train evacuation in the event of a flood.

Due to the difficulties in recreating a crisis situation, the urban survival exercise usually takes the theoretical form - it is learning procedures and remembering the location of emergency exits or shelters. This usually comes down to practicing valuable skills under controlled conditions, such as the use of first aid kits or self-defense. It is worth having a holistic approach to survival, i.e. taking care of both the equipment and the condition and psyche. In times of crisis, survival depends on your attitude and your will, and you shouldn't forget it.
