You know very well how important it is to have solid and reliable footwear. Especially at the end of autumn and winter. What you expect from footwear is, above all, water resistance and durability. If you want your shoes to serve you for a long time, you need to impregnate them before each winter season. There are many factors that adversely affect footwear in winter. These include snow, salt, rain and mud. That is why we decided to show you proven ways to impregnate winter boots!

In this article you will learn:

  • what is the impregnation process,
  • when is the best time to impregnate shoes,
  • how to do it,
  • what products to use for care.

Impregnation, that is protection

It is a protection of the surface of the footwear against any harmful external factors. To do this, you must perform a suitable protective coating. Its task will be to preserve water resistance. Impregnation mainly concerns the outer layer of the material. Remember that even the best impregnation will not make poor-quality footwear waterproof! Shoes must be made in such a way as to withstand difficult weather conditions. Proper care will extend the service life and enhance the waterproof features.

Observe – impregnate

At the beginning, it should be noted that impregnation is most effective when you do it regularly. To know when to impregnate your shoes, it's best to observe the behavior of water drops on the surface of your shoes. If you can see the drops remain on the shoe, the protective layer is working. Conversely, when water droplets are absorbed into the material, it is a sign that it needs to be impregnated. The best time for this process is before the snowfall.

Best do it exactly

Before you apply the impregnation to the fabric, check what fabric the shoes are made of. The care measures differ from each other. This should be borne in mind, as you can damage the top layer of your shoes by using the wrong substance.

Start the whole process with a thorough shoe cleaning. For this, choose a sponge rather than a brush. It works well in cleaning grain, nubuck and suede leather shoes. Clean all shoes, including the sole. Remove the sockliner and laces. You should reach every nook and cranny of the shoe. Leave the shoes at room temperature to dry. Put a piece of newspaper inside to draw out the moisture. Remember! Do not dry your shoes by the radiator, the leather may crack or deform.

Start impregnation with a wax-based conditioner. It will be a very good undercoat for the waterproofing agent. When the material has absorbed the nutrient, apply a beeswax-based lubricant. The point is not to clog the pores of the shoes so that they can still be breathable. The wax is best rubbed in with your fingers. Do it slowly and carefully. Pay attention to every detail of the shoe. Impregnate the seams, the tongue of the shoe and the places where the shoe was glued. The agent should be rubbed in until the material stops receiving it. After waiting from 40 minutes to an hour, apply another layer. The next day, polish the shoe with a dry cloth. Everything so that the substances are well absorbed into the material.

Handy set for Impregnation

The basis of shoe impregnation is to increase its water resistance. Ready-made preparations are replacing traditional home care methods. Use waxes, pastes or oils for any kind of smooth leather. For grain leathers, the wax impregnation alone should suffice. As for rough leathers, covering them with a layer of wax may affect the color of the material and the pleasant structure of the material itself. The wax can also reduce the breathability of the shoe, which can make the foot sweat more. However, the water resistance will increase. Shoes with fabric inserts are best cleaned with spray preparations. Spray such a care product at a distance of about 15 cm from the shoes. Due to the intense smell of the spray, do it outdoors. After spraying the shoes, allow them to dry.
